Why Sovereign AI Infrastructure Matters: SCX Brings Australian AI Capacity to Equinix Fabric
A strategic milestone for Australia's AI future — delivering world-class inference where Australian data already lives.
The Sovereign AI Imperative
Australia stands at a critical juncture in its technological history. As artificial intelligence reshapes industries, economies, and national security, the question of where AI infrastructure resides has become a matter of strategic importance.
For too long, Australian organisations have been forced to send sensitive data overseas — across oceans and jurisdictional boundaries — to access the compute power needed to run AI models. Every query, every document processed, and every insight generated has traversed public internet infrastructure, passing through data centres in the United States, Singapore, or elsewhere. This isn't just a technical inefficiency — it's a national sovereignty issue.
Sovereign AI infrastructure means the entire technology stack — from data centres and compute hardware to the AI models themselves — is developed, owned, and operated within Australia, subject to Australian law and governance. It's about ensuring that Australian data stays Australian, that latency is minimised, and that the nation retains control over its most sensitive information.
The economic stakes are significant. According to analysis by Kearney and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, AI could add between AUD $160 billion and AUD $235 billion to Australia's economy by 2034. But that value can only be captured if Australian organisations have access to AI infrastructure they can trust — infrastructure that meets rigorous data sovereignty requirements while delivering world-class performance.
SCX Joins Equinix Fabric: A New Chapter for Australian AI
Today, we announce a milestone that brings this vision closer to reality. SouthernCrossAI (SCX) is now providing sovereign AI inferencing capacity to the Equinix Fabric AI ecosystem, making our ASIC-powered inference nodes discoverable and accessible to enterprises, government agencies, and developers across the Asia-Pacific region.
What This Means
Through Equinix Fabric — Equinix's software-defined interconnection service — organisations can now establish secure, low-latency, private connections directly to SCX's ASIC-accelerated inference nodes. This is a fundamental shift. Instead of routing data through public internet infrastructure or sending it to overseas hyperscaler environments, organisations can connect to Australian-based AI inference capacity through a private, direct connection.
This builds on our existing operational node at Equinix's SY5 IBX data centre in Sydney, and positions Equinix Fabric as the primary interconnection backbone for our planned multi-site national network.
"Joining Equinix Fabric AI ecosystem means that any organisation connected to Equinix Fabric can now reach our sovereign inferencing nodes with a private, direct connection. This is how we scale Australian AI — not by moving data overseas, but by making world-class inference available where Australian data already lives."

SambaNova SN50: The Hardware Behind Australia's AI Future
A sovereign vision requires world-class hardware. That's why SCX has confirmed that our national infrastructure expansion will be powered by SambaNova's next-generation SN50 Reconfigurable Dataflow Unit (RDU) — the world's fastest AI chip purpose-built for agentic AI inference.
Why the SN50 Matters
The SN50 represents a fundamental shift in AI hardware architecture. Unlike traditional GPUs that process data in discrete steps, SambaNova's Reconfigurable Dataflow Architecture maps computations into a continuous dataflow pipeline, minimising data movement between memory and processing units. The result is dramatically reduced latency and superior performance per watt.
For Australian organisations, this translates to:
- 5× the maximum speed of NVIDIA Blackwell B200 GPUs for agentic inference workloads
- More than 3× the throughput for complex, multi-model AI workflows
- Just 20 kilowatts of power per SambaRack — enabling deployment in existing air-cooled data centres without infrastructure modification
- Support for models up to 10 trillion parameters with context lengths of up to 10 million tokens
- Millisecond hot-swapping between models — essential for the complex, multi-model agentic workflows increasingly required by enterprise and government AI deployments
The SN50 begins shipping in the second half of 2026, and SCX's confirmed supply positions Australia as one of the first markets to deploy this technology at sovereign infrastructure scale.
"The deployment of the SN50 across SCX's national network will be a defining moment for Australian AI, delivering agentic inference capabilities at a price and performance level that simply wasn't possible before."
— Harry Ault, Chief Revenue Officer, SambaNova Systems
Building a National Network
This announcement is just the beginning. The supply of SN50 chips underpins SCX's confirmed expansion to additional Equinix facilities across Australia. New nodes will progressively come online throughout 2026 and 2027, building out a national network of sovereign inferencing capacity accessible through Equinix Fabric from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and beyond.
Our partnership with SambaNova and Equinix represents something genuinely unique in the Australian market: a full-stack sovereign AI platform that combines world-leading inference hardware with the connectivity and reach of the Equinix ecosystem.
What This Means for Australian Organisations
For Australian enterprises and government agencies, the implications are profound:
- Data sovereignty: Keep sensitive data within Australian borders while accessing world-class AI inference
- Low-latency performance: Private connections through Equinix Fabric mean faster response times than routing to overseas providers
- Security and compliance: Meet stringent government and regulatory requirements without compromising on AI capability
- Future-proof infrastructure: Access to the latest generation of AI hardware, delivered at scale across Australia
The Road Ahead
Australia's AI future is being built today. SCX is proud to be at the centre of this transformation — delivering the infrastructure that Australian organisations need to innovate with confidence, compete globally, and retain control over their most valuable data.
This is not just about technology. It's about national capability, economic opportunity, and ensuring that Australia shapes its own AI destiny.
The infrastructure is coming. The hardware is confirmed. And the future of sovereign AI in Australia is here.
