SCX.ai Sponsors Opir — Ultra-Efficient Guardrails That Outperform Models 20x Their Size
SCX.ai is proud to sponsor the release of Opir, a new family of highly performant, highly efficient guardrail models developed by Wordcab and Knowledgator. Opir encoder guardrails outperform models 20x their size in safety classification, and SCX.ai's APIs helped generate the 2M+ training dataset.
Introducing Opir
In Ukrainian, Opir translates to "resistance" — resistance against unsafe AI outputs, against expensive safety overhead, and against the assumption that guardrails have to mean another large model pass.
SCX.ai is proud to sponsor the release of Opir, a new family of highly performant, highly efficient guardrail models built by Wordcab (New York) and Knowledgator (Kyiv, Ukraine) — two companies focused on efficient, self-hosted model deployments.
Opir encoder guardrails are purpose-built for teams that need safety checks at middleware speeds, not as another giant model in the loop.
The Problem With Most AI Safety Systems
Most LLM safety systems rely on running another large model pass over the prompt or response before passing it through. That can work, but it brings three compounding problems:
- Too slow. A second full model inference on every turn adds 300–700ms of latency per call.
- Too expensive. Running a frontier-class model just for classification costs as much as running the actual application model.
- Too awkward to deploy. Routing prompts through a second inference service adds operational complexity, failure modes, and infrastructure overhead.
How Opir Is Different
Opir takes a different path: encoder guardrails that score prompts, responses, retrieved documents, and tool outputs against a broad safety taxonomy — including jailbreaks, prompt injection, context exfiltration, tool abuse, unsafe autonomy, and much more — without running a second large language model.
The results are striking. Opir's flagship model matches or outperforms safety classifiers built on models 20x its size, at a fraction of the latency and cost.
"We wanted to build something that could run in front of any LLM, in any production pipeline, without the team needing a PhD in MLOps to keep it running." — Opir team
SCX.ai's Role
SCX.ai played two important roles in Opir's development:
-
Training data generation. SCX.ai's APIs helped generate a large portion of the 2M+ example training dataset used to train Opir — drawing on SCX.ai's diverse inference workloads across sovereign Australian infrastructure.
-
LLM-as-Judge evaluation. SCX.ai's models acted as LLM-as-Judge throughout all Opir benchmark evaluations, providing consistent, high-quality quality signal for safety classification accuracy.
Both contributions reflect SCX.ai's broader philosophy: building infrastructure and tooling that makes the broader AI ecosystem more capable, not just our own stack.
The Opir Challenge
To celebrate the launch, SCX.ai is sponsoring the Opir Challenge — inviting builders, red teamers, prompt-injection researchers, and AI security practitioners to try to break Opir.
The setup:
- :card_index_dividers: You enter a sandboxed chat environment
- :shield: Opir sits between your prompt and the LLM
- :closed_lock_with_key: Your goal is to get past the classifier and recover the key inside
secrets.txt - :trophy: The first 5 successful challengers win 3 billion tokens (distributed over 30 days)
The rules:
- One account per person
- 100 attempts per participant
- Only chat messages are allowed
- Stay inside the sandbox
Timeline:
- :date: Starts: July 5 at 9:00 AM ET
- :date: Ends: July 12 at 9:00 AM ET
- :dart: Winners: First 5 users to extract the secret key
- :gift: Prize: 100M tokens/day for 30 days from SCX.ai, for each winner
The Models Are Already Live
Opir is released under the Apache 2.0 license — open, permissive, and ready to self-host.

What This Means for SCX.ai Customers
For SCX.ai customers running production AI systems, Opir is a direct complement to our sovereign inference infrastructure. Self-hosted Opir guardrails can run alongside SCX.ai's API, giving enterprises a complete safety layer where:
- Prompts and responses stay on Australian infrastructure (SCX.ai)
- Safety classification is fast, cheap, and self-hosted (Opir)
- No data leaves the sovereign stack
That's a production-ready, cost-efficient safety architecture — without the hyperscaler tax.
Try the Challenge
The Opir Challenge opens July 5, 2026. If you're a red-teamer, security researcher, or just curious about what encoder-based safety really looks like in practice — register your interest at opir.ai/challenge.
Come try to break it.
